JOYDEEP'S EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE'S PROFILE:
UNIVERSITY OF PORTSMOUTH, UNITED KINGDOM (CORPORATE GOVERNANCE LLM/GRAD/ICSA AND CILX)
The independent rankings place Portsmouth in the top two per cent of universities worldwide and among the best in Europe for the second year running.
The news of Portsmouth’s success comes days after the University rose eight places to 55th in The Sunday Times Good University Guide, and weeks after the University was ranked in the UK’s top 30 for student satisfaction.
The University has also been rated highly for the quality of its teaching and year-on-year attracts increasing number of applications from prospective students.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Graham Galbraith said Portsmouth’s continued presence in independent rankings was due to a range of factors.
He said: “Being placed in the top two per cent of universities worldwide is testament to our hard work and investment over many years.
“Repeatedly our passion for teaching, learning and research has been recognised by a host of different league tables.”
“We aim to deliver an excellent experience for students and give them the best possible education and future opportunities.
“We also strive to be at the cutting edge in research and these rankings prove we are achieving that.”
Times Higher Education describes its global rankings as the most comprehensive, sophisticated and balanced global rankings in the world. They are collated using 13 rigorous performance indicators and are the only global rankings to judge world-class research institutions against all of their core activities – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
Phil Baty, rankings editor, said: “The University of Portsmouth’s position in the top 400 is very impressive. The international outlook of the university appears to be its key strength and has helped it to remain within the top two per cent of institutions worldwide.”
The World University Rankings are used worldwide by governments and research councils to help determine funding decisions.
International ranking and reputation is also the most influential factor for prospective students and their parents.
Speaking about the quality of research at Portsmouth, Director of Research, Professor Tara Dean said: “We are committed to increasing excellence in research at Portsmouth, and international activities and collaborations are integral to this. We focus on links with leading research institutions in Europe and beyond; links that are mutually beneficial and grounded in academic excellence, to enrich our research and provide the widest educational experience for our students.
“This year, our researchers have been particularly successful in attracting funding to support their participation in national and international consortia, undertaking long-term research programmes that address priority thematic challenges, such as health, ageing, environment, energy and the digital economy.”
The rankings this year place the United Kingdom second only to the US in terms of the number of world-class universities. The rankings were launched at the Times Higher Education World Academic Summit in Singapore.
History: The University was founded as the Portsmouth and Gosport School of Science and the Arts in 1869. Due to the dependence on shipping and trade to the city, the main function of the college was to train the engineers and skilled workmen who went on to work at the city docks, as well as at the large Royal Navy dockyard situated in Portsmouth. However, due to a decline in shipping and population since World War II, when large swathes of the city were destroyed by German bombing, the college was forced to diversify its syllabus and teaching in order to attract new students.
In the expansion of British Higher Education in the 1960s, the college was renamed Portsmouth Polytechnic and given the power to award degrees accredited and validated by the CNAA. The expansion of the polytechnic continued and in the late 1980s, it was one of the largest polytechnics in the UK.
In 1992, Portsmouth and other polytechnics were granted university status with power to validate their own degrees under the provision of the Further and Higher Education Act 1992. The formal inauguration of the University of Portsmouth was celebrated at a ceremony in the Portsmouth Guildhall on 7 July 1992.
Campuses: The university is split between three main areas, the University Quarter, which is centred around the Portsmouth Guildhall area,Langstone Campus and the Military Technical College of Oman in Muscat.
Langstone Campus: Langstone is the smaller of the two campuses, located in Milton on the eastern edge of Portsea Island. The campus overlooks Langstone Harbour and it is home to the university's sports grounds. It also houses a restaurant for the students onsite, as well as a 'student village' feel, which provides accommodation for 565 students in three halls of residence; Queen Elizabeth Queen Mother (QEQM), Trust Hall and Langstone Flats. Rooms in QEQM and Langstone Flats are en-suite.
Langstone Campus used to be home of the University's School of Languages and Area Studies, which has since moved into Park Building in the University Quarter.
University Quarter: The University Quarter is a collection of university buildings located around the centre of the city. This area contains most of the university's teaching facilities and nearly all of the Student Halls of residence (except the Langstone student village and two halls (Rees Hall and Burrell House) located on Southsea Terrace, the city's main esplanade).
The University Library (formerly the Frewen Library) was extended in 2006 at a cost of £11 million. It was opened by the crime writerP. D. James. The University has also recently invested in the Faculty of Science, in particular by renovating the aluminium-clad main building, St Michael's, adjacent to James Watson Hall, named after the co-discoverer of the structure of DNA.
A new faculty called "Creative and Cultural Industries" was opened in September 2006. It provides a unique environment in which all aspects of creative thinking will flourish and develop by combining creative schools from across the university.
Military Technological College of Oman[edit]On 7 June 2013, the University of Portsmouth announced its partnership with the Military Technological College of Oman. This involves the University of Portsmouth providing academic guidance and academic accreditation for the education of 4,200 students with technical roles in armed services and a few civilian employers in the Sultanate of Oman. This has been criticised by the student Amnesty International Society and by Campaign Against the Arms Trade who consider Oman an authoritarian regime, likely to use military capabilities on their own citizens or in regional conflicts.
Organisation and structure[edit]Governance[edit]Portsmouth is formally headed by the Chancellor, currently Sandi Toksvig. The Chancellor is largely a ceremonial role; Portsmouth is run day-to-day by the Vice-Chancellor, presently Professor Graham Galbraith, along with a single integrated decision-making body known as the University Executive Board. St Mary's Orphanage & Day School (ICSE)
In 1848, The Congregation of Christian Brothers (Missionaries of Ireland) founded theCalcutta Male Orphanage at Murghihata, Calcutta. In 1947, it came to the present campus in Dum Dum in North Calcutta and was renamed St. Mary's Orphanage and Day School. The school particularly serves the northern and eastern part of Calcutta and North 24 Parganas District.
Campus St. Mary's is one of the most prestigious schools of Calcutta having one of the biggest campuses in the city comprising two football fields, an auditorium, a basketball court, a skating rink, parks, badminton court and of course class rooms. The school also has a library, computer centers, laboratories and a chapel hosting mass and other holy events.
As the school was also a residential school for orphans and the underprivileged till 2006, it also has dormitories, a dining hall and a kitchen, along with servants quarters and the three main school buildings. However, the boarding closed down in 2006 and the school is now run as a day school only.
EducationSt. Mary's provides education under the ICSE/ISC board, New Delhi. It is run by the Congregation of Christian Brothers of Ireland. Nursery section and +2 level i.e. Class XI and XII, have been introduced. From the 2012 session admission of girls to the +2 level has also started, breaking the school's long-standing reputation of being a premier Boys' only school in Calcutta.
However, in a kind of way the school had become co-ed much earlier, as the open school under the NIOS which is personally supervised by the Brothers had been co-ed since inception. The open school drives literacy among the poor and underprivileged. St. Mary's provides +2 education under NIOS. Secondary education under NIOS is provided by its sister school St. George's in Bowbazar (Central Calcutta).
The Congregation of Christian Brothers of Ireland have renounced their robes and aprons in order to mix better with the general public. Consequently the presence of the Brothers in white cassocks along the long aisles and corridors of the school are now gone.
